No quick fix to siren issue in Amityville

A spirited controversy involving the use of the emergency siren by the Amityville Village Fire Department is underway, and both sides have valid points. What strikes us, however, is that the department and Village officials, are working hard to address residents' concerns about noise, quality of life and real estate values.

There's no easy or quick solution to the dilemma. On one hand, the residents' lives are somewhat disrupted by the use of the siren. On the other, an arbitrary and ill-thought out decision to cease using them could cost someone their life.

Amityville Village Mayor Peter T. Imbert and Amityville Fire Chief Arthur Smith are correct in moving cautiously to resolve the problem. They recognize they have a broad responsibility and have shown that they are willing to be innovative, to spend money and make changes when it is reasonable and responsible for them to do so.

What the residents must do now is work with the Village to reach a solution- and maintain some patience.
