Peter Schleifer, member of Amityville Methodist Church Longtime Massa-pequa resident and Babylon Rotary member Peter C. Schleifer died December 23, 2007 at his home from cancer. He was 70 years old. He was born March 10, 1937 in Budapest, Hungary to Miklos and Elisabeth (nee Redei); he came to America on his own in 1958. According to his family, he was a proud American by choice, but was equally proud of his Hungarian heritage and traveled there and to Germany many times. For many years, he worked for Nikon and AIC Photography as a product manager and most recently as an account executive at Neighbor Newspapers. "He was a nice guy and he always helped the Chamber (Chamber of Commerce of the Massapequas) whenever we needed pictures of festivals. He was always so helpful and he never charged us," said Bob Rubino of the Chamber who also worked with him for the last 15 years at Neighbor Newspapers. Mr. Schleifer enjoyed sports such as ice hockey and was an active Babylon Rotarian where he became a Paul Harris Fellow for his "Service Above Self." He was also a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Amityville and was part of the United Methodist men's group and was their official photographer recording the church's memories. He leaves behind his wife of many years, Renate; his son, Nicholas of Babylon; and his cousins, Steven and Erzsi.
A private cremation was held under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc. in Amityville. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Donations in Mr. Schleifer's name can be made to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 27106, New York, New York 10087.
