Amityville Memorial High School orientation eases students into high school

Shown in the photo, ninth grade students entering Amityville Memorial High School this past September were invited to a back-to -school orientation and barbeque, where they received a stack of school supplies to start their first year of high school.
The ninth grade orientation program and back to school barbeque have become a tradition in the Amityville Public Schools. The event was originally designed by Assistant Principal Peter Hutchinson to welcome ninth grade students to their new school building, to ease some of their fears about transitioning from middle school to high school, and to foster a sense of community amongst students. Upper classmen volunteers assisted Hutchinson in facilitating the day, which took place at the end of August.

In addition to attending morning workshops, where they participated in ice-breaker activities and addressed issues ranging from opening lockers to peer pressure and bullying, students received a stack of school supplies to get them off to a good start, including notebooks, binders, folders and pencils. By early afternoon, students were mixing and mingling at a barbeque that was held on the grounds of Amityville Memorial High School near the football field, with a newfound confidence developed by their participation in the program.
