Park Avenue School, parents out to educate the whole child

Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in Amityville recently held its first in a series of monthly workshops designed to bring parents together with educators to discuss practices for engaging children to become effective learners, both in and out of the classroom. Park Avenue Principal Betsy Gorman and Assistant Principal Michael Febbraro conducted the workshop entitled Educating the Whole Child.

More than 50 parents and their children attended the workshop. A "carousel activity" served as the highlight of the evening, wherein a series of questions were passed through four different groups. The questions solicited feedback from parents on strategies for engaging young children. This included identifying students' needs, encouraging them to become good listeners, and enhancing communication between school and home. Each group's answers and suggestions were shared among the larger group at the end of the workshop.

"Parent participation is something we want to increase here at Park Avenue School," said Gorman. "Our goal is to include our parents in the teaching and learning process and help them to identify the important role they play, as well as identify the common values we all share. Parental feedback will help to determine themes of future workshops as the year progresses."

Barnes and Noble Bookstore gift cards were raffled off at the end of the evening. Newly appointed Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Susan Schnebel also attended the workshop. For more information on the dates of future workshops, check the school calendar or district website at www.amityvilleufsd.org.
