Dennis Edsall, 59-year old Amityville veteran and hero
Mr. Edsall died suddenly December 7, 2007 at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola. He was 59 years old. Born June 12, 1948 in Rockville Centre to William and Marie (nee Firehock), he served his country during the Vietnam war and received the Purple Heart and the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross. For many years he was employed as a housekeeper at Northport Veterans Hospital and he lived in the Frontier Mobile Home Park in Amityville for 18 years. According to his daughter, Christine, her dad was out walking his dog one day when he saw a trailer home on fire. Without thought of his own safety he entered the trailer and rescued an elderly woman from the blaze. "My dad was a proud of his military service and that award," she said. "He was so friendly and everyone knew him because he always had time to stop and talk." Mr. Edsall leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Diana; his children: Christopher of Amityville and Christina of Lindenhurst; his son-inlaw Philip Cantelmi; his mother-in-law Florence Cole; and his beloved dogs, Molly and Trixie. A prayer service was held at the Powell Funeral Home, 65 Broadway, Amityville, on December 11, 2007. Rev. Fr. Robert Mason officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. December 12, 2007, followed by interment in Calverton National Cemetery with Military Honors.
