Government bailouts violate the American philosophy of capitalism
Dear Editor,
Most Americans are puzzled about the trillion dollar bailout of major banks, and the uncertainty that is looming in the future as a result. This debt created by greed and corruption, will be inevitably borne on the backs of responsible Americans who live within their means and budget according to their income. Our new President has been promising medical care for all. This can never be accomplished with this huge debt lingering and ready to grow as GM, Ford and Chrysler are in the batters box.
In the history of our democratic capitalist society, major auto makers such as Kaiser, Packard, Studebaker and others all went under without the socialistic idea of government partnership, investment or bailout. Where was the Government when thousands of Long Islanders lost their jobs at Grumman, not to speak of Fairchild or the old Mohawk Airlines of the 1950-60s. I remember no talk of bailouts and Long Island survived when there was serious talk of a Long Island economic collapse.
These bailouts are making a mockery of the American Constitution and making a giant leap into the very dangerous world of socialistic government that will thwart our drive to succeed in spite of adversity. The very politicians who most Americans do not trust, are the architects of this beginning of the end of democracy as we have known it. They are all to blame and they still have not answered their call to protect and serve as the problem worsens threatening our way of life, while AIG executives literally bask in the sun as American workers foot the bill for their follies.
The United States Constitution says nothing about the Fed entering into partnerships with business, and therefore the Fed should not inject itself into the lives of the inept, arrogant and irresponsible. It's a national tragedy that there was never a bailout for American Veterans, many of whom remain homeless.
As this economic situation worsens, Massapequa school taxes continue to skyrocket, due to the same kind of greed that is bringing the powerful U.S. Government to its economic knees. As a result, our most prized investment, our home, is rapidly losing its value as school board members wear blinders and school administrators poetically bask in the sun; but for how long?
