HEARD IT ON THE GRAPEVINE
LUCY IS A GREAT GRANDMOTHER. Her granddaughter, Kelly Morris Venema and her husband Jeremy welcome their first child, Ashley Morgan Venema on Oct. 28 in Crystal, Michigan, weighing in at four pounds, three ounces. The baby's grandparents are Sue and Doug Morris of Babylon. Her great grandparents are Lucy Trumble and Bernard Scanlon, both of Babylon.
JENNY YOU MADE US PROUD. We want to congratulate another Babylon High School gal on her stunning election last Tuesday as Judge on the 5th District Court in Islip. Newsday's final returns gave Jennifer Henry 58 percent of the vote with the Republican, Democratic, Independent and Working Family lines and Cameron Alden who ran on the Conservative line, getting seven percent of the vote. Jenny was born in Babylon Village, graduated from Babylon High School and is a graduate also of the University of California in Sacramento. She earned her law degree from Touro Law School in Huntington. She started her professional career with the Suffolk County District Attorney's office where she prosecuted major felonies. She was an Associate Village Justice in Babylon Village where she presided over vehicle laws and Village ordinances. She was a law clerk for Acting Supreme Court Justice Michael Mullen in Riverhead. Jen lives in Brightwaters with her two children, and will be sworn in on Jan. 5, 2009. We wish all of the very best to our Village girl. Congratulations again Jen.
RESTAURANT WEEK WAS A BIG SUCCESS IN GEMELLI'S. Went there last week with friends and every table was taken. The place was jammed with customers. Our waiter Christopher, did a fine job considering the crowds he served that evening. For only $25 a person, for a three-course meal, it was a heck of a bargain.
A RECENT VISITOR John Zaruka of California accompanied by his wife, was a recent visitor with his mother, Alice Zaruka; and also visited the Cornell Restaurant School of which he is a graduate, and while in Babylon he visited with "old" friends at the "Sewer Club" breakfast.
FROM OUR MAIL BAG. Heard from Patty Boylan Donnelley who now lives in North Carolina where she's taking several college courses. Patty is the daughter of Marge Boylan Burns who passed away several months ago in North Carolina. Also heard from one of Marge's closest friends, Merritt Thurlow who lives with her daughter Betsey Shields and her husband Ken in Tacoma Park, Maryland.
OBAMA SCORES BIG WIN NATIONALLY, but here in Babylon Village, McCain won by just one point, taking 50 percent of the vote over Obama's 49 percent, while in Oak Beach, Obama won 53 percent over McCain's 47 percent, according to Newsday's post-election coverage.
THEY CAME FROM ALL OVER. Former teachers from the U.S. Government School in Orleans, France came from near and far to celebrate their 45th reunion which was held this year in Le Rivage Restaurant in Manhattan. John Byrns of West Islip and Mary Ellen Sullivan of Babylon Village whose late husband, Tom Sullivan taught at the school, were among those enjoying the day visiting with friends that they had known over the years.
