Al Chasnov: Athlete, teacher and decorated war veteran, at 87
Longtime Massapequa resident and Levittown teacher, Alan A. Chasnov died Sept. 20, 2008 at New Island hospital in Bethpage. He was 87.
He was born Sept. 19, 1921 in Brooklyn to Morris and Rebecca (Menchel) and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with four stars, the Victory medal, the Philippine Liberation medal with two stars and the American Theatre Medal.
In addition, Mr. Chasnov was well known throughout Amityville, where his wife Ruth was a member of the Amityville Rotary Club.
For 30 years, he taught in the Levittown School District until his retirement. A lifelong athlete, he was a Masters World Champion Weightlifter and a member of the Nassau County Swimming Officials Association.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Chasnov is survived by his children, his grandchildren, his great grandchildren, his nieces and nephews, brother and sisters-inlaw; and many friends.
Rabbi Kathy Novick conducted a funeral service at the Powell Funeral Home on Sept. 22, 2008 followed by interment in the Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn.
