Jackie McCullough of the North Amityville Taxpayers Association was surprised to hear that since 2007 and through March of this year, there have been only 12 accidents at the intersection of Rt. 110 and Smith Street, North Amityville. As a regular traveler of that intersection, she said she has been witness to the problems there, the most recent one a major accident that occurred April 10. In that accident, an SUV rolled over on to its side and two people were injured and taken to local hospitals.

Following that accident, McCullough called upon the Suffolk County Police Department to take action there to reduce the number of accidents and near misses that McCullough and others have witnessed.

"There seems to be a problem with visibility with the light and that could account for some of the accidents," said McCullough.

First Precinct Inspector Robert Cassagne said that the number of accidents at that location are about average for that type of an intersection, but that he will continue to have police monitor the area to make sure that the traffic laws are enforced.

McCullough said that another problem may be the long stretch between lights from Smith Street and the next one north on Jefferson. "That is something that the police may want to explore," said McCullough.

"The police can't babysit an intersection, so I think we need to have other things done," said McCullough. "Perhaps even a turn signal might help reduce accidents there. We are going to explore ways of seeing if that can be done," she said.
