Obituaries Local visitation to be held for Ed Coffin: Copiague coach & teacher

 
A funeral and mass will be held locally to honor former longtime Amityville resident and Copiague teacher and coach Edward T. Coffin who died on August 30, 2008 at his home in Port St. Lucie West, Florida. He was 76. Born in Brooklyn on

December 20, 1931, he lived in New Jersey before moving to Amityville in 1943. A 1951 Amityville High School graduate, he played on the Amityville football team that beat Riverhead for the 1950 County Championship and later was selected for the 1950 All Suffolk Team.

 

He served in the U.S. Army in Japan from 1952 to 1954 and on his return won a 4-year scholarship to Syracuse University in New York State. Known as "bullet" for his blocking skills, he played with Jim Brown on the team that went to the Cotton Bowl in 1957 and he played in the North-South game in Miami, Florida. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1958 but suffered a career ending knee injury.

He moved to Lindenhurst and became a teacher and coach of football and baseball at Wantagh High School, Lawrence High School and Copiague High School. He moved to Florida after his retirement.

Mr. Coffin was a member of the Syracuse Letterman's Club, the VFW in Jensen Beach and the B.P.O.E. Elks in Port St. Lucie West.

He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Judith "Joy" (nee Boselli) of Port St. Lucie West, Florida; his children: Nancy of Port St. Lucie West, Florida, Steven of Lindenhurst and John and his wife Kathy of Nesconset; his six grandchildren and his siblings: Walter and his wife Ann of Colonial Heights, Virginia and Eleanor of State College, Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by his son, Edward, his sister Joan Lundquist and his brother-in-law Fred Lampe.

Mr. Coffin will repose at the Lindenhurst Funeral home, 424 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst on Friday, September 26 from 7-9 p.m. A Mass will be held Saturday, September 27 at 11:45 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 210 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst.
