A great summer in the Amityville Schools
Shown in the photo, Amityville Public School District Director of Athletics Tony Cerullo, Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams, and All Sports Summer Preparatory Camp Coordinator Christopher Roth (left to right), were pleased to be able to offer the first ever summer camp for district students thanks to the support of the Board of Education, district staff and the community. Amityville's elementary level students had the unique opportunity to participate in the district's first ever All Sports Summer Preparatory Camp. The program, which was the brainchild of Amityville's Director of Athletics Tony Cerullo, was led by more than a dozen of Long Island's best coaches and Hall of Famers. During camp, students were exposed to physical activity and athletic instruction, in addition to enjoying breakfast and lunch every day during the three-week program.
Christopher Roth, an English teacher at Amityville Memorial High School and the coordinator of the program, was instrumental in planning and facilitating the All Sports Summer Preparatory Camp with Cerullo. "These students are the district's future athletes," stated Mr. Roth. "Our goal was to expose them to a variety of sports and begin to build their skills and sportsmanship and nurture their interest in athletics."
Led by physical education teacher and coach Katie Marien, volleyball was just one of many sports students enjoyed during the Amityville Public School District's three-week All Sports Summer Preparatory Camp. The program accomplished this and much more. New friendships were forged, and district physical education teachers and coaches who committed themselves to assisting in getting the program off the ground had the opportunity to work with students on a whole new level. As an added bonus, athletes from Amityville Memorial High School had the opportunity to sign on as camp counselors, and to share their skills with the district's younger students. "The teachers, coaches and high school athletes were extremely enthusiastic to be involved in the program," stated Mr. Roth. "There's something about summer camp that brings everyone together and encourages cooperation and teamwork."
District social worker and coach Reynolds Hawkins (center), along with two volunteer athletes from Amityville Memorial High School A walk around the camp, which featured a variety of sports stations including soccer, tennis, track and field, flag football and volleyball, to name a few, showed students, teachers and coaches enjoying the newly renovated track and tennis courts as they learned athletic and social skills that will stay with them throughout their remaining years in the district. "The kids had the time of their lives," stated Mr. Roth. "We hope to be able to offer the program for even more students next summer."
