SLA closes troublesome Amityville bar
The New York State Liquor Authority has revoked the license for the Punta Roca, a bar in Amityville that Village officials and police have been concerned about for months. The owners have until September 3 to respond to the authority's move, which was based on the site having building and code violations. SLA officials also cite noise, and said the operators were running an disorderly premise.
The owner of the bar, Miseael Guardado, has appeared before the board several times asking for permission for a cabaret license. Each time, Mayor Peter T. Imbert cited the number of police calls and incidents at the bar, telling the owner the board could not seriously consider his application until he can prove that he can run an orderly business. The bar is located at 528-30 Broadway.
"The SLA's decision is confirmation of our concerns and suspicions at that establishment," said Imbert. "When our police responded to the bar in the normal course of their job, they observed what they believed were SLA violations and reported them appropriately. They did an outstanding job."
Guardado is represented by the law firm of Blumberg, Cherkoss and Fitzgibbons of Amityville. Calls to their office for comment were not returned.
In related matters,
•Superior Metals at 9 DeForest St., Amityville has closed following what one representative of the firm described as a dissolution of the partnership. The site, which is zoned for scrap metal recycling, and is at the border between Amityville Village and Copiague, has generated considerable controversy over the past two years. Residents from Copiague have complained that the site was not well run, noisy and a disruption to the residential community in which they live.
The Village monitored the situation and issued summonses whenever it found that the business was in violation of Village codes and ordinances. Unfortunately, said Imbert this was one of those "nuisance" type of situations that is difficult to resolve. "We will continue to monitor the site and act appropriately when necessary," said Imbert.
