Amityville Students Participate in the Annual Long Island Special Olympics

On Sun., May 4, Amityville students and volunteers participated in the 37th Annual Long Island Special Olympics Spring Games at William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach. The sun shone brightly as the Amityville athletes spent the day competing with the help of student volunteers from Amityville Memorial High School. The day included a bus ride, parade, opening ceremonies, track and field events, lunch, carnival activities, and games that everyone enjoyed.

Athletes from Amityville's Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, Edmund W. Miles Middle School, and Amityville Memorial High School participated in the event. The following Amityville students earned awards at the games:

From Park Avenue Memorial Elementary are Luis Hernandez - gold medal in 100 and 50-meter and bronze in 4x100 relay; Olivia Wilson - silver in 100-meter, gold in 50-meter, bronze in 4x100 relay; Aaron Curenton - gold in 100 and 50-meter, bronze in 4x100 relay; Devan Coley- Mills - gold in 100 and 50-meter, and bronze in 4x100 relay and Thomas Rivera - bronze in 100 and 50-meter run.

From Edmund Miles Middle School is Tyler Pravata - gold in 400-meter and silver in 200-meter, silver in 4x100 relay.

From Amityville High School are Kevine Robinson - gold medal in 100 and 50-meter, silver in 4x100 relay; Kristian Robinson - silver in 100 and 50-meter, silver in 4x100 relay; Kristopher Robinson - gold in 100 and silver in 50-meter, silver in the 4x100 relay; Tyron Burch - silver medal in the 50-meter, silver in the shot put and Michael Jones - gold medal in the 100, silver in the 50-meter.

"The day was a huge success," agreed coaches Ellen Brett and Rebecca DePaolo, who would like to thank the following high school volunteers Davion Davis, Shaquana Hicks, Jesse Seymour, Steven Medard, Eric Walker, Shatasia Jackson, Brian Ward, Manzel Bowman, Cornell Warrick, Rashim Gaines, . Aaronia Charles and Chris Allen.

"We would also like to thank high school teacher Alyssa Del- Giorno-Fishman for her help for the entire day and Park Avenue teacher Dana Herz, whose husband also joined us to support the students, and all the parents and grandparents who came to share their children's joy and pride," stated Brett.
