Martha Gomes, mother of Amityville resident

West Babylon resident and animal-lover Martha H. Gomes died June 18, 2008 at the Sunrise Assisted Living Center. She was 96, and had lived there for the last five years.

Born December 7, 1911 in Queens, she later cared for her family and worked as a legal secretary. For many years, she lived in Jamaica, Queens.

An avid Mets fan, she had a soft spot for cats and dogs and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Gomes leaves behind her daughter, Marilyn Denzler of Amityville; her grandchildren, Steve, Donald, Glenn and Thomas Denzler, and her great grandchildren, Lauren, Jessica, Amanda, Erin and Rachel. She was predeceased by her husband of more than 30 years, Gerard, and her grandson, Robert Denzler, Jr.

The Rev. David Wachenhuth, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Islip, officiated at the Funeral Service at the Powell Funeral Home in Amityville. Interment followed in Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.
