A memorial service for Dorothy and Anthony Lombardo, former residents of Amity Harbor, was held June 26, 2008 at D'Andrea Brothers Funeral Home in Copiague.
The couple, who had been living in Palm Bay, Florida, died within a year of each other; Dorothy at 69 in March, 2007 and Anthony at 78, on June 17, 2008. The couple met in 1966 through mutual friends. That day was only the beginning, and eventually they married and moved to Amity Harbor, where they lived for 14 years.
Mr. Lombardo worked for Pan American Airways, and Mrs. Lombardo was a homemaker. Both enjoyed shopping at flea markets in their spare time and Mrs. Lombardo was very involved with her family and neighbors, while also keeping a home for her husband and six children. Mr. Lombardo collected Lionel model trains, volunteered with the Suffolk County Police Explorers, and was involved with his community by helping out with Amityville Boy Scout Troop 397.
According to their son Anthony, Mr. and Mrs. Lombardo were "very friendly, and always laughing." Anthony's brother John adds that they were "kind and generous people, never turned down anyone if they asked for help."
Anthony remembers having a huge St. Patrick's Day party every year. His father worked cooking up pounds of corn beef and cabbage for the family feast. "It was funny," he said, "because he was Italian, but our mother was Irish."
John recalls how his parents were committed to their children while they were growing up. "Both mom and dad were very involved with everything we did, inside and outside of school," he said.
The couple is survived by their children Christine Sheflin and her husband David of Margate, Florida; Deborah Degenhardt and her husband Steven of Ronake, Virginia; Judith Groth and her husband Daniel of Gardner, Massachusetts; John Lombardo of Washington Courthouse, Ohio; Anthony Lombardo and his wife Linda of Huntersville, North Carolina, and Larry Lombardo of Bay Shore. Their 12 grandchildren also survived them: Daniel, David, Mark, Haley and Kirstin Lombardo; Jennifer and Danielle Degenhardt, Emily and Daniel Groth and Courtney and Justin Sheflin, and Michael Winthrop.
Dorothy and Anthony were cremated and were interred at St. Charles Cemetery in East Farmingdale following the memorial service.
