Amityville's Career Program Jump Starts Students' Futures

2008-06-25 / Front Page

The Amityville Public School District is providing its middle school students with a jump-start towards their future by exposing them to a plethora of occupational opportunities that are available to them right here on Long Island.

Amityville's Career Breakfast/Lunch Program is designed to provide middle school students with the opportunity to learn about career options during their middle school years in a personal, interactive setting. The program allows students to meet local career men and women and speak with them about their professions. A question and answer driven dialogue allows students to direct the presentation and gain a comprehensive understanding of each presenter and his or her career. Prior to the program, district guidance counselors work closely with students in the classroom to discuss potential

career options, and are able to identify students with interests in particular areas. Students showing specific interests in related topics are invited to participate in the program. The series of informational career seminars offered at Amityville's Career Breakfast/Lunch Program appeals to a variety of students and includes presentations by professionals in nursing, law enforcement and criminology and sports-related occupations.

Professionals including Suffolk County Detective Robert Van Wyen, Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Christopher Gioe and Suffolk County Police Officer Kathy Waithe gave the students firsthand insight into the demands and rewards of their careers.
