Obituary: Dorothy Pitti
By Joanna Fantozzi
Dorothy Pitti, a well-respected member of the Amityville community, was a woman who seemed to do it all. She was involved in many organizations in her community such as the Amityville and New York chapters of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Amityville Women’s Club, the Mary P. Myton Literary Society, and the First United Methodist Church.
Dorothy M. Pitti, 81, died June 16, 2008 at the Belair Nursing Home.
Mrs. Pitti became involved in her community when she joined the Amityville Chapter of the Eastern Star in 1961, and headed the nursing committee for many years. All of her hard work led to her being elected to the position of Grand Matron of the New York State Chapter in 1987. Under her leadership, the organization raised money for a lot of causes, including pediatric heart research, and the creation of the Eastern Star Nursing Home.
Although Mrs. Pitti was known as a busy and ambitious woman inside her organizations, her son David remembers his mother as a woman whose focus was her family.
“She was a patient and wonderful person…. I honestly don’t know how she did it all,” he said, adding that his mother loved to cook and was known for her corned beef and cabbage dish.
When she wasn’t caring for her family, Mrs. Pitti, or “Dotti” as she was known, loved spending time with them.
“We always went on vacations together as a family-she loved spending time with us and was a stay-at-home mom until we entered high school.”
Mrs. Pitti worked in the Town of Babylon tax office and was a bookkeeper for Schwing Electric in Farmingdale.
In addition to her son David and his wife Kathleen of Amity Harbor, Mrs. Pitti is survived by her son, Walter K. and his wife Laura, and by her grandchildren, Dorissa, Jonathon, Jessica and Christine Pitti, and Gary Rosensweig, as well as by her great grandchild Tanner Blackford. Her grandson Keith Pitt predeceased her, as did her husband Walter, who died in 1998.
Mrs. Pitti reposed at Powell Funeral Home in Amityville, June 18, 2008. Funeral Services were at the United Methodist Church in Amityville on Thurs. June 19th with Order of the Eastern Star Services at 10:30 a.m. Ms. Pitti joins her husband, who died November of 1984.
