Dawnette Darden of Amityville honored for going above and beyond for Alzheimer's patients
The Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation (LIAF) honored 50 individuals, and three therapy dogs, at its 14th Annual Outstanding Service Awards Luncheon, at the Garden City Hotel, on April 10 for their dedication and compassionate service to those stricken with Alzheimer's disease. Keynote speaker for the luncheon was the president of the New York State Bar Association, Kathryn Grant Madigan, Esq. Madigan gave a talk on: Aging in America, Challenges that Alzheimer's Disease Presents, and Potential Solutions.
Among the honorees was Dawnette Darden of Amityville, for her commitment as a recreation leader for the Reflections Program at The Bristal Assisted Living, Massapequa.
As the recreation leader in the Reflections Unit at the Bristal, Darden is known for her innate ability to get the residents up physically, cognitively and emotionally. She gets the residents exercising their bodies, brains and spirits. The Reflections Unit is for residents with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Darden has instituted many new programs including a drama club, choir and a political debate club.
Darden is also a personal trainer and professional vocalist. She received her degree for Performing Arts at Adelphi University.
