St. Martin's students in Turkey Parade fundraiser

During the month of November, the children in the third grade at St. Martin of Tours school in Amityville, participated in a service project to help the families in need in the community. The teachers do this to help the children realize that even at their age there are ways they can help those around them. In Patricia Savish's class, the parents sent in snacks to sell during snack time. The children in the class brought in snack money to buy the cookies, brownies, chips, candy left over from their Halloween candy.

The other third grade teacher, Suzzanne Clark, offered her class the opportunity to buy used books for 25 cents.

The two classes, which have a total of 28 students, raised $300. The class moms, Kerry Henzy and Stacy Cassidy, took the money to the Massapequa King Kullen and purchased 40 turkeys. The children paraded around the schoolyard carrying the frozen turkeys. The class then took its first field trip to parish outreach. Keith Mainhart, the director for St. Martins Parish Outreach, was there to explain to the students the kinds of things the Church in our community does to help our neighbors. Thanksgiving is an especially good time for the students to experience the various ways our parish members mission to their neighbors and to learn how they are helping in that mission.
