A bright light this holiday season

Always at this time of year, we have the opportunity to attend many of the holiday functions, including tree lightings, that bring people together in the spirit of community. And, each year, we are impressed by the events and how much they really make up the fabric of small town USA.

Last week there were tree lightings in local Villages; a holiday home tour sponsored by the Junior League of Amityville, and a WassailBowl celebration in Babylon V illage. Next week, Babylon Town holds its lighting ceremony.

The events are all very well attended, proof that people are looking to make the holidays more than just a mad rush shopping spree at the malls. They want to retain the spirit of the holiday by greeting their friends and neighbors and retaining the wonderful comfort of knowing they live in a town where people know each other and care for one another.

Our chambers of commerce and our local officials are to be commended for working hard every year to make these events so delightful. Despite the cold weather outside, they warm the heart and fill everyone with community pride.

If you have not had the opportunity to spend some time at these types of events, put the credit card and shopping bags down and rush out to be a part of one before the holidays come and go. You won't be sorry you did.
