Amityville Navy Operational Center welcomes families

The Navy Operaitonal Support Center in Amityville (NOSC), celebrated its 7th annual Family Day last month. The event recognizes the support and sacrifice given by family members of those serving in the U.S. Navy.

Family Day is a time to bring together families, which is important because they support one another as a network that is of particular importance when military members are deployed overseas.

"Acknowledging the support our families give us is very important," said NOSC Amityville Cdr. Greg Erickson. "Without their love, support and courage, we would not be able to get our job done. Families directly contribute to our mission success."

The Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center in Amityville opened its doors in May, 1987 as part of the Armed Forces Reserve Center. It stands on the land that housed the NIKE missile site during the cold war and houses Army, Navy

and Marine Corps Reserve Units representing 198 reserve personnel fromLong Island and the Metropoolitan area. It is scheduled to relocate next year.

In the past four years, more than 70 members of the NOSC have mobilized and deployed in support of the global war on terrorism to such areas as Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and the Horn of Africa.

More than 300 people attended the event, many of them family members of sailors who are currently deployed overseas.
