CFD election and bond proposal for new ambulance on ballot Tuesday On Tuesday, Dec. 11, voters in the Copiague Fire District will head to the polls to elect a new fire commissioner and to approve a $300,000 bond issue for the purchase of a new ambulance. The seat of Commissioner Mike Johnson, who is not seeking reelection, is open. Running unopposed for that seat is Michael Sullivan. The department responds to more than 2,000 calls for assistance per year, the majority of which are rescue calls. Officials noted that the department, which moved to a partially paid EMT rescue program last year, has been experiencing an increase in the number of rescue calls every year. That has been exacerbated by the closing of Brunswick Hospital, which has forced the rescue volunteers to travel further to either Good Samaritan or New Island Hospital, adding hours on their time and mileage on the district's ambulance. The department serves approximately 26,000 residents and operates with a budget of $2.9 million. The current tax rate in the district is $11.96.
The election is 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Fire Headquarters, 320 Great Neck Rd., Copiague. The term of office is from Jan. 1, 2008 through Dec. 31, 2012. The election is open to all registered residents of the Copiague Fire District as of Nov. 19, 2007.
