St. Martin of Tours third graders write essays to celebrate veterans

The third grade at St. Martin of Tours school in Amityville, entered the "Celebrating Our Veterans" essay contest. The Town of Babylon, in conjunction with the Veterans' Advisory Council, set up the contest. The third grade teachers offered this to their students as an extra-credit assignment. The students wrote up the essays and they were sent over to Councilwoman Carol Quirk. Seven students took advantage of this opportunity; they are shown left to right in the photo: top row Natasha Rodriguez, Halle Norris, Joseph Cassidy, Sarah Pulvidenti and Cyril George. Bottom row, Justin Stark and Joan Medwig.

One example of an essay is Joseph Cassidy's written below.

"Celebrating Our Veterans"

My Grandpa fought in the army and has lots of stories. He got injured really badly in WWII, but he is ok. For an old and hurt person, he is really fun. He plays cards and games with me. When we celebrate Veterans' Day, we celebrate the people who fought and are fighting in war. Some young adults risked their lives to save our country. One of the presidents decided to have Veterans' Day as a national holiday. If you fight in war, you can fight in the navy, army, air force, and marines. On Veterans' Day people do parades, fairs and carnivals to celebrate the holiday. My family and I always make sure we remember and talk about the veterans on Veterans' Day. It is and always should be a very special holiday in our country.
