Homecoming 2007, a Day to Remember as Warriors Defeat Mt. Sinai Mustangs

It was a perfect day for a parade and football game as the Amityville community came together to support the Warriors in their battle against the Mt. Sinai Mustangs during Homecoming 2007. But it wasn't just the weather that made it a perfect day; it was the community support, teamwork and perseverance that brought the Warriors, considered "underdogs" in their match up with the Mustangs, to a sweet victory.

To kick off Homecoming 2007, Board of Education Trustee Elisabeth La Rosa and President Michele Sikgrankur, along with Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Susan Schnebel, and Interim Athletic Director Tony Cerullo led a festive parade through the center of Amityville, followed by members of the Amityville Teachers Association. The 2007 Homecoming Court, consisting of King Angel Mazarrra and Queen nominees Michele Morales, Dahlia Facey, Amy La Rosa, Gabrielle Bernard and Ellyn Matos were next in procession, along with members of each class at Amityville Memorial High School and their floats, the Women of the Future Club, and the Marching Band and Cheerleaders. The grand finale of the parade featured the Amityville Fire Department, who alerted the community to the festivities with lights flashing and sirens blaring.

Following the parade was the Homecoming 2007 pre-game Rose Ceremony, an Amityville tradition, where senior football players and cheerleaders were called to the 50- yard line to be recognized for four years of hard work and dedication. In addition, each senior presented his or her mom or another family member with a rose to thank them for their support and encouragement.

Kick-off was promptly at 1:30 p.m., with Amityville winning the coin toss and choosing to receive the ball. A tough battle ensued, with the Warriors reining in the Mustangs for a scoreless first quarter. The second quarter began a whole new ball game, when the Mustangs managed to be first on the scoreboard, but missed the field goal, making the score 6-0. Within minutes, the warriors were back in the game, with a touchdown and two-point conversion, giving the Warriors an 8-6 lead.

At halftime, the air was tense as Mt. Sinai took the lead 14-8, but Amityville regained control of the ball on Mt. Sinai's 15-yard line after a bad snap on a punt attempt, and scored the winning touchdown and two point conversion, making the final score 16- 14, giving Amityville what will be, no doubt, one of its most memorable victories in years.
