Ghosts, goblins and all sorts of creatures

The Annual Thomas H. Smith Ragamuffin Parade was held in Amityville again this year. For, story, additional photos and names of winners, see Page 3.
The ghosts and goblins- and grinches- were out in force on Halloween, casting a spell that brought rain to the Annual Thomas H. Smith Ragamuffin Parade in Amityville Village. As a result, all of the anxious participants had to wait until Sunday to march around in their scary, cute and unusual costumes.

At approximately 10 a.m., Oct. 28, the parade started down Park Avenue. Marchers went around the Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, and into the playground where Amityville Village Police handed out treats and juice to all the participants.

Then Amityville Village Justice Debra DiSalvo reviewed the cascade of skeltons, ghosts, Raggedy Ann's and Andy's and more, and selected ten win- ners. They were:

Karalina M. Merado Torres; Holly Holdsa; Kelly Holbert, Ryleigh Hilbert, Tyler Lobiando, Robert Chester, RJ Chester, Morgan Kelly and Mackenzie Kelly fromOld MacDonald' s Farm; Elizabeth Maynard, Deirdre Maynard and Amy Schuessler; Olive Maynard, I Love Lucy; Andrew and Annabel Lunz; Hayden Shuff as Popeye the Sailor Man; Giovanna Vigarito as Ugly Betty; Kily Johnson as Tootsie Roll in a bowl of candy.

This annual parade was started by Amityville Police Officer Thomas H. Smith who served the Village from 1956 until his death in 1979. His son Tom, also an Amityville Police Officer continued the tradition in his dad's name from 1982 until 1985 when he moved to the Suffolk force. In 1987, his brother John joined the Amityville Police Department and continued the parade, with the help of the entire Smith family and the Amityville Village Police family.
