Mary O'Brien, retired Amityville 1st grade teacher

Longtime Babylon Village resident and educator Mary Cecilia O'Brien died peacefully on September 12, 2007 in her husband Eugene's arms. She was 76-years old and taught first grade in the Amityville elementary school for 20

Born Mary Cecilia Sullivan on July 24, 1931 in Manhattan, she was a graduate of Ursuline University in New Rochelle, NY, Trinity College in Washington D.C. and Hofstra University in Uniondale, NY. In 1956 she moved to Ralph Avenue in Babylon Village and lived there for 51 years. Mrs. O'Brien began teaching in Amityville from 1972 until her retirement in 1992.

In addition to being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. O'Brien enjoyed her involvement with St. Joseph's R.C. Church's Outreach Program, the Ministries of Consolation and Holy Communion and was a proud member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the women's league at the Babylon Village Golf Course.

Mrs. O'Brien leaves behind her husband of 54 years, Eugene; her children: Stephen of Long Island, Timothy of Evanston, Illinois, Kevin of Long Island, Sheila Horne and her husband Gerry of Randolph, Massachusetts and Kathleen Preston of Raleigh, North Carolina; her grandchildren: Christopher and Meghan Horne and Jennifer and Timothy Preston; her brother, Peter Sullivan of Bridgton, Maine; her sister-in-law: Sheila Sullivan, Frances Sullivan and Dorothy Meisenzahl and her husband William of Fairfax, Vermont. She was predeceased by her brother, Theodore Sullivan.

She reposed at the Fredrick R. Chapey West Islip Funeral Home on September 16, 2007. A Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Babylon on September 17, 2007. Interment followed at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Babylon.
