We missed you at the polls Nov. 6

"Democracy is not a fragile flower; still, it needs cultivating."

That quote from President Ronald Reagan points to the necessity of ongoing public interest and participation to preserve the Democratic process we enjoy in this country. The abysmally small percentage of registered voters who cast ballots Nov. 6, and who stay at home instead of providing their voices at the polls every year, is a shame and a concern. And worse, there are hundreds of thousands who don't even register.

We wonder what keeps people at home and why they don't take part in the privilege of voting? We wonder, too, why at a time when our young men and women are fighting and risking their lives to bring freedom to other countries around the world, there is such apathy here at home?

Every voice does count and every vote means something. As Reagan said, flower of Democracy is fragile and can wither and die unless cultivated by public participation and citizen activism.
