Friendly “Family Feud” at Park Avenue Memorial

The staff at Amityville's Park Avenue Memorial Ele mentary School (PAMES) held its second monthly workshop for parents and students in a series that focuses on educating the whole child. During Superintendent's Conference Day designed for staff development, teachers spent several hours recording their beliefs about engaged teaching and learning. The September parent workshop used the teachers' work as a foundation to focus on parent and guardian beliefs about how students learn best and how parents and other adults can be part of the process. Lastly, the students attended workshops at PAMES designed to extract their own opinions and values about teaching and learning, which were the basis for the questions used during the second workshop, designed around the "Family Feud" game show theme.

Parents who attended this latest workshop, "PAMES Feud," participated in multiple rounds of "Family Feud" using the student-designed questions and answers while their children cheered from the audience. Park Avenue teacher Melissa Asbell kept the crowd engaged as the master of ceremonies for the evening, and parents clearly enjoyed working together to learn more about their children's thoughts on teaching and learning, and also vying for one of three gift cards to Border's Books, which were donated by the Amityville Parent Teacher Coalition (APTC). Board of Education President Michele Sikhrangkur, Vice President Juliet- Jordon Thompson, Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams, and Assistant Superintendent for

Curriculum and Instruction Susan Schnebel attended the event, joining the family panels to work with parents to answer such questions as "What are the characteristics of a great teacher?" and "What is the number one reason why students get

good grades?"

For more information on the dates of future workshops, check the school calendar or district website at www.amityvilleufsd.org.
