Dick Kenny, retired S.C. 1st Precinct Lieutenant Retired Suffolk County Police Lieutenant, and longtime Amityville Village resident Richard "Dick" W. Kenny died September 16, 2007 in Mahwah, New Jersey. He was 74 years old. He started his career in law enforcement with the Amityville Village Police Department and moved to the County shortly after that department was organized. He served for 35 years and retired as a lieutenant in the First Precinct. The day he retired, Kenny was honored by those with whom he served. As a sendoff, the men gathered at the front of the precinct with the department's Bag Pipes and motorcycle brigade. It was a scene that caused the typically unassuming Kenny to be emotionally moved. ""He couldn't look at the video tape of that sendoff without being moved," said his wife in recalling the event." "He was a good boss to have worked under," said Alfred James, publisher of the Amityville Record who worked under Kenny for 15 years. "He was an old-school cop who cared about the wellbeing of his men and felt a responsibility to the public he served." That apparently came from his personal commitment that led him to law enforcement in the first place. In an interview in 1995, Kenny said he was drawn to the career because he believed it was a "worthwhile," vocation. I feel as if it was a privilege to have been a part of the police department," he said at the time. Mr. Kenny lived in Amityville for more than 45 years before moving to Mahwah, New Jersey three years ago. In his spare time, he loved to play tennis and was a fitness buff. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Josephine (nee Vitale); his children: James and his wife Lisa of Blauvelt, New York, Christine Clark and her husband Andrew of Ramsey, New Jersey, Laura Thibault and her husband Blake of Lafayette, California; his grandchildren: Nicole, Allison, Alex, Ryan, Tyler, Brooks and Carter; his sister Patricia Boswell and her husband Robert; his niece Diane Bockino and her husband John.
Funeral arrangements were held at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey, New Jersey.
