Poetry becomes an act of discovery for the Amityville Artists' Circle

The Amityville Artists' Circle opened its gallery door to poetry educator and poet Kevin Dineen on Friday, September 28. A retired Long Island teacher, Dineen, who called his presentation Poetry: A New Way of Seeing, was part of the Artists' Circle's new series of programs devoted to the arts and culture.

Speaking to 20 Artists' Circle members and guests, Dineen compared poetry to a gymnasium, a place where our senses, emotions and intellects can be exercised. Presenting several poems for scrutiny, he rigorously engaged the audience for feedback and analysis. Thanks to his enthusiasm and energy, poetry became an act of discovery as powerful images of remembrance, ambiguity, in- decision, and life issues emerged from the pages he read. One participant felt that after the discussion, poetry had been "demystified and made to feel comfortable."

Irene Greenhalgh, president of the Amityville Artists' Circle, praised Dineen's efforts at the end of the program and promised to bring him back. She said of the membership, over 50 in number: "It's wonderful to be part of a group of such talented, creative and giving people who happen to be artists. I'm proud of what we have accomplished and look toward a future blossoming of the arts in this community."

Dineen returns to the Circle Gallery at 186 Broadway in Amityville for another poetry discussion, tonight, Wednesday, October 10, 7 p.m.
