Spitzer decision is a small gain at great cost
Editorial

Gov. Eliot Spitzer's decision to permit illegal immigrants the right to have drivers licenses is an affront against every law-abiding American and an abdication of his responsibility to the citizens of New York and across the country. In his decision to make the policy change, Spitzer said that it would provide an added measure of safety on our roads by assuring that illegal immigrants who get behind the wheel of a car know the rules of the road and have adequate insurance. What he is not telling the public, however, is that this small advantage is at the tremendous cost of nationwide security. Shame on him.

The governor said his decision was based on his assessment that the problem illegal immigration is a national responsibility, and that it is not the state's role to determine who is living here legally and who is not.

Again, shame on him. Illegal immigration, its costs and its threat to Americans is everyone's problem. Spitzer, along with some other weak-kneed politicians who can't see beyond their next election, has taken an oath to serve and protect and uphold the Constitution. Have we already forgotten how the 9/11 hijackers were able to take flying lessons and move throughout the country unchallenged? They had valid drivers licenses.

The only thing more alarming than Spitzer's narrow minded decision is the abject silence of our state officials on the change. We have not seen nor heard an outcry on this outrageous decision, and not a single state lawmaker has uttered a word about trying to stop it. Shame on them.
