Public Commentary Long Island living at its very best Dear Editor:
On this final Saturday in August, in the towns of both Islip and Babylon and all four points on the compass, summer was again winding down, but not with a whimper- with a boom. This festive afternoon, while bathed in sun, is also awash in green as the Irish and near misses of both Islip to the East have their half way to St. Patrick's Day Parade and party on the walks of Kismet and the Hibernians of Div. #2 have their annual picnic-barbecue on the grounds of their hall in Babylon to the west. There was a beautiful outdoor concert at Gardners Park with country and folk music, while Babylon, the big value Town, escorted out lady summer with its annual all-day beach blast, completed with an ice-cream eating contest, music, beach volleyball and a gala, full scale, 3- minute or more fireworks extravaganza and finale, the biggest and longest on Long Island this season. Brian Leitch, Babylon Parks vs. parking lots Dear Editor: While reading Plan B 2.0 by Lester Brown, I came across an insightful statement: "...the ratio of parks to parking lots may be the single best indicator of the livability of a city - an indicator of whether the city is designed for people or for cars." Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the ratio of parks to parking lots in Amityville, and the surrounding communities?
