Let's keep the classroom for learning

There's been a lot of hoopla about banning cupcakes and sweet treats in our schools to address the growing problem of childhood obesity and in some schools the traditional birthday parties are being reconsidered.

While we agree that encouraging healthy eating habits is something we should promote in our homes and in our schools, we believe the change has other benefits. We have often heard teachers complaining about the amount of time these parties, fund raisers and special events take away from classroom learning. For that reason alone, limiting or eliminating them is a good idea.
