No stealth amnesty measures will go unnoticed
Editorial

An amendment to the Department of Defense (DOD) funding bill, introduced for discussion this week by Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin, D-Ill., will, if approved, shove down the throats of Americans part of the massive immigration reform bill they made abundantly clear two months ago that they opposed. What some of our lawmakers in Washington are now attempting to do, as we predicted, is to tack on key portions of that defunct bill in a camouflaged effort to ignore and undermine the public's clear directive to secure America's borders and address security concerns before talking about amnesty.

The amendment (SA 2237), would provide citizenship status to certain illegal aliens pursuing college degrees. It would allow them to receive in-state college tuition rates on an equal basis with hard-working United States citizens.

The measure sets down certain criteria, including that the illegal immigrant be of "good moral character," have a high school diploma or the equivalent and pose no national security risk.

Who exactly is going to make those judgmental decisions, and what other services and programs will these individuals be eligible to receive? How can we rely upon a massive bureaucracy to take on these additional responsibilities when it can't provide adequate security at the airports or put up fences along our borders?

Another measure that almost made it into the bill was one that would have expanded visas, allowing U.S. corporations an increased number of immigrants who work for lower wages to compete with college-trained Americans with comparable skills.

These are not the first, and won't be the last attempt by arrogant Washingtonians to ignore the legal mandate of those who put them into office. They have made it abundantly clear that reaching out for potential votes takes precedence over fulfilling their legal obligation of protecting their current constituents and we intend to call them up on it each and every time.

Call your representatives in Washington and tell them you want Durbin's sneaky amendment pulled.

And, while you're at it you might want to call sneaky Durbin's office at: 212-224-2152, or fax his office at 212-228-0400.
