ASD Superintendent to step down next week; school board prepares to hire interim
BY CAROLYN JAMES

The Amityville School Board is expected to appoint an interim superintendent this week. He will replace Superintendent Dr. Brian De Sorbe who steps down September 29.

The board is considering three candidates, one of whom will hold the post until the school board completes its search for a new superintendent. Assisting the board in that is School Leadership LLC of Port Jefferson.

In conducting its search, the board is also assisted by the comments of the public as part of a focus group.

"I think that what the community is looking for is what the board is looking for as well," said Michelle Sikhrangkur, school board president. "We are looking for someone with an educational background as opposed to a business background and someone who is a team builder."

The board decided to hire an interim superintendent to give it additional time to search for a permanent replacement for Dr. De Sorbe, and to extend the search into the fall. "We did not want to narrow the scope of our search by setting a deadline for making a decision at the beginning of the summer," said Sikhrangkur. "We have been advised that the fall is a good time to reach out for candidates."

While the board has not set a deadline for hiring a new superintendent, Sikhrangkur said that it is likely that School Leadership will be soliciting the names of candidates, conducting background checks and present the board with some names for consideration by November, the earliest.

In other school news, the district reports that a change of scheduling for the first football game of the season, which was moved to the fields at UNAYO in North Amityville, went smoothly. The change was made because construction on Amityvillle's playing fields, track and tennis courts was still underway.

"We had maintained some hope that the work would have been done by the time school opened but we had a couple of issues and the rain to deal with," said Sikhrangkur.

The district was advised during the construction process that it needed to construct a leaching field for better drainage at the tennis courts at the high school. That required that a new engineering plan be developed and set the project back. In addition, all of the rain in August, slowed things down.

"We expect that everything will be finished and that the next game on the schedule for Amityville will be played on our fields," said Sikhrangkur. "In the meantime, we appreciate what UNAYO did in working with us and the work of Dr. De Sorbe who made sure that we did not have to forfeit a game."
