Dorcas Rogers: Amityville Junior High Music Teacher

Dorcas J. Rogers, a longtime Massapequa resident and music teacher who dedicated herself to her beloved family and students, died August 26, 2007 at New Island Hospital in Bethpage. She was 78 years old.

Born in Parishburg, Virginia to the Reverend Oscar Lawrence and Susan Catherine (Asher) Johnson, she was a graduate of New York University, Virginia State College and valedictorian from the Christian Industrial Institute. For more than 30 years she was a music teacher in the Amityville Junior High School until her retirement in 1986.

According to her family she was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a founding member of the Sigma Psi Omega Chapter.

Mrs. Rogers leaves behind her husband, William H. Sr. of Massapequa; her children: William H. Jr. and Lawrence R. and his wife Tracey E. Mitchell; her grandchildren: Danielle Nicole and Xavier Lawrence; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and former students. She was predeceased by her brother, Oscar L. Jr.

The Reverend Slayter officiated over private graveside services at L.I. National Cemetery at Calverton on August 31, 2007. Arrangements under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., 67 Broadway, of Amityville.
