Volunteers needed for Long Island Cares

Long Island Cares, Inc. The Harry Chapin Food Bank is looking for volunteers to assist with its 15th Annual Check-Out Hunger Campaign from October 1, 2007 through January 1, 2008.

Check-Out Hunger is a unique partnership between Long Island Cares, area supermarkets, shoppers and volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to set up and maintain Check-Out Hunger Supplies at stores in their own local area. Participating supermarkets include: King Kullen, ShopRite, Pathmark, Wild by Nature, Waldbaums, Food Emporium, Food Town and Kings. Help is needed with the following areas: In Suffolk, Lindenhurst, East Islip, Bay Shore, Islip, Oakdale, Selden, Melville, Huntington Station, Bridgehampton, Hampton Bays, Manorville, Eastport, East Hampton, Cutchogue and Mattituck and in Nassau are Bethpage, Hewlett, Hicksville, East Rockaway, West Hempstead, Frank Square, Port Washington, Oceanside, Long Beach, Garden City, Jericho, Levittown, Albertson, Mineola, Greenvale, Westbury, Carle Place and Glen Head.

This program generates much needed funding to help feed approximately 259,000 hungry Long Islanders annually including 93,000 children.

Sign-ups begin right away. Set up begins October 1 and require approximately one half hour per week.
