Let's cut the kids a break
Editorial

For more than two months, our children have been relatively carefree, out of school and into the wonderful days of summer. They've slept in and stayed up late. They've been to the beach and at the pools. Some have gone to camp or Bible School, while others spent time with friends doing what kids do best- enjoying themselves.

Next week, they head back to school and structured schedules that will surely chafe their free spirits. They will have to rise with the sun, put on more clothing than they have had on in weeks, and slip their feet into new and uncomfortable shoes. They will carry books and begin the process of classroom learning anew.

It's never an easy transition, and despite their enthusiasm, they could use a little help and understanding. Share their enthusiasm and their trepidation. Demand excellence, but be prepared to cut them a break as they bid farewell to summer and greet a new and challenging school year.
