Joint APO and SCPD investigation results in arrest of church burglar A joint investigation by the Amityville Village Police Department and the Suffolk County PropertyRecovery Section led to the arrest of a subject who was charged with burglarizing the Simpson Methodist Church July 17. Police gave this account: At approximately 2:25 p.m., August, 23, police were investigating the discount Shop and Pawn Store at 520 Broadway, Amityville for possible possession of stolen property. While in the store, Amityville Police Det. Bruce Pescitelli observed several signatures in the store log from Matthew Haber, 20 of 21 Washington Ave., Amityville, a subject known to him from a prior arrest. Coincidentally, Haber entered the store while the detective was there and while Haber was speaking to him about the property he sold to the shop, APO Pamela Slack entered the shop and immediately recognized a Roland Amplifier on the wall as being part of proceeds from the church burglary. Since Haber lives around the corner from the church, detectives began to question him to see if he knew anything about the burglary. He admitted that he took the music equipment from the church and sold it to the pawn shop. Detectives estimate that Haber stole approximately $4,000 worth of musical equipment which he sold to the pawn shop for $40. He was arrested at the scene and charged with burglary.
The store's owner, Yoland Banks 24, of 145 Scudder Ave., Copiague was issued two summonses for failing to have a consumer affairs license to sell precious metals within Suffolk and a second-hand sales license to operate the pawn shop. Numerous other items such as Ipods, cameras, TV's, computers and construction equipment were confiscated pending an ongoing investigation. She may face additional charges, said police.
