We mourn loss of hard-working Americans

We can't imagine the heartbreak and loss being endured by the families of the six miners who now, we must acknowledge, have given up their lives in Utah. It is apparent that they may never be found, and that their families must live with the images of their loved ones being entombed in that horrific cave in and earthquake.

We recognize, here too, the tragic loss of two New York City firemen whose names must be added to the list of victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our country. It is too bad that political expediency took precedence over common sense and that the Deutsch Bank building in which these firemen lost their lives was not imploded years ago. If it had been, these two firefighters would be alive today.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to these individuals who left their homes and their loved ones that final morning to put in a day's work, support their families and be contributing members of our American society. They never made it home and we pray for them.
