Nancy Elizabeth Latham, former Amityville resident
Mrs. Latham was born April 22, 1963 in Southampton to the late Reverend William H. Perkins and his wife Carol. She graduated with honors from Southside High School, Rockville Centre in 1981. She received a bachelor of science degree in liberal studies from Cal- State Fullerton and master of science in elementary education from Hofstra University. While practice teaching in Locust Elementary School in Garden City, she was asked to begin a computer class for the first grade. In March of 1988 she married John Latham of Rockville Centre. Shortly after the marriage they started their family, first with Kaitlyn, then Grace. Mrs. Latham then returned to the Locust School as a support teacher for the first grade. She was instrumental in starting a developmental skills program which she enjoyed for 14 years. When third daughter Lily was born, a one pound, nine ounce preemie, Mrs. Latham was able to continue teaching and attending to the baby in the hospital nearby. Her interest in reading prompted her to work for her Masters in Literacy, which degree she recently completed at Touro College inNew York City. Survivors include her husband John of Seaford; her daughters, Kaitlyn, Grace and Lily; her mother Carol Perkins of Glen Cove and her brothers, Randy of Danville, California, Jonathan of Freeland, Washington and James of Darien, Connecticut.
The Reverend Dr. Louise Stowe-Johns, pastor, First United Methodist Church of Amityville, said the funeral service in the Church on Saturday, August 4, 2007. Private cremation followed. A memorial donation in Mrs. Latham's name may be made to Monter Cancer Center Research Project, 450 Lakeville Rd., Lake Success, NY 11042. Arrangements were under the direction of the Powell Funeral Home, 67 Broadway, Amityville.
