Amityville student wins stipend from Lehigh University for medical research

Melanie J. Rudnick, of Amityville, is the recipient of a $4,000 stipend from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Rudnick was chosen to study with Barry Bean Ph.d. and Robert Flowers, Ph.d. to lead a team of six students during a 10-week summer program, June 1 to July 31 under a four-year grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Research Fund Institute of Higher Learning.

Rudnick has been researching selection effects on sperm functions by fluorous surficants. The four-year grant is sponsored by the Biosystems Dynamics Summer Institute, which includes faculty, graduate students, and post-doctoral undergraduate students, of which Rudnick is a junior at Lehigh University.

Rudnick's major is pre-medicine with a concentration in chemistry. She plans on becoming a pediatrician and extending her research beyond her practice.

Rudnick graduated from Amityville Memorial Senior High School in 2005. She hopes to return one day to the area and practice medicine in the Amityville community.
