NACEC graduates look to the future
BY TRACY BONGIANNI

For Kevin Cummings, the program at the North Amityville Community Economic Council (NACEC), was the first step toward achieving a personal dream. He took it and now looks forward to a brighter future for himself and his family, he said.

"I wanted a new opportunity and to be able to elevate myself," said Cummings, who was one of more than 100 graduates who were recognized for completing medical and technical courses at NACEC in cooperation with Western Suffolk BOCES.

Cummings was a police officer in Jamaica for nine years before coming to the United States in May with his wife and two children, a five-year-old daughter and a three-month-old son. He wanted to continue his work in law enforcement, but quickly learned that since he is not yet a citizen, he could not fulfill that dream.

And so, he sought other avenues, always with the same thing in mind: to earn a living in a profession that helps people.

"I wanted to offer a good service and feel good about my career choice," he said in explaining why he chose the health field.

Inspired by a friend who is a registered nurse, Cummings signed up for the nursing assistant's course offered at NACEC. With his new degree in hand, he was already looking to the future, saying he wants to apply now for NACEC's LPN program, which will take him approximately two years to complete. After that, he said he wants to become an RN.

For Rosemarie Dearing, executive director of NACEC, it's students like Cummings and their stories that remain with her, year after year.

"Each class means a lot to me," she said. "They (the students) are hard working and it is inspirational just to see what they go through. I hope they continue to stay on track. I want each of them to be happy and successful."

Cummings fellow classmate James McKine said he took the course because he wanted to start a new career. "The program is great," said McKine, who wants to work with children and senior citizens.

Tarak Patel, one of the graduates of the nursing program wants to work at a hospital. "The program was a good starting point," he said, adding that his goal is to become a doctor.

Jamie Gualke, another nursing assistant, was inspired to go into health care after watching her grandmother battle cancer. She encourages others to enter the program. "It's definetly worth it," she said.

Finally, Jennifer Freismem summed up the program this way: "It was a lot of fun."
