Legislator Elie Mystal Proclaims Edmund W. Miles Middle School Day

Shown in the photo, Legislator Elie Mystal paid a special visit to Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Public School District to congratulate students on their participation in the gambling prevention program, and to proclaim May 22nd, "Edmund W. Miles Middle School Day."
In cooperation with South Oaks Hospital, students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Public School District have had the opportunity to participate in a unique program designed to educate students on the importance of making good choices, and the dangerous consequences of gambling. Students learned how addictive and destructive gambling can be through the program, which was presented by Stella Roberg, a certified social worker at South Oaks. "Our purpose is to network and make connections so we can bring gambling prevention education to the community," Roberg stated.

At the end of the program, students participated in a poster contest, the theme of which was gambling prevention. The winners' posters will be recreated and used in the South Oaks calendar. Students also wrote letters to their local legislators about the importance of passing legislation to control gambling, and were surprised when Legislator Elie Mystal responded to their letters with a personal visit, during which he proclaimed May 22, "Edmund W. Miles Middle School Day" in Suffolk County. "You should be proud of your commitment to what you learned in this program," Legislator Mystal said as he praised the students.
