ASD staff and programs recognized

Throughout the 2006-07 school year, the Amityville School District was recognized at both the national and local level and developed several new programs to enhance the district's curriculum. Following are some of the programs and awards the district received:

•New York State Rehabilitation Association (NYSRA) Quality Effective Systems Transition Service Award, State Level: This award to Amityville Memorial High School was presented to School Board Trustee Dennis James on Friday, May 18th at the Amityville School- Business Partnership Meeting. Recognized were the Guidance Department under the direction of Mrs. Hausfeld.

•Western Suffolk Counselors' Association (WSCA) Amityville School-Business Partnership Wins Best Practice Award 2007: Amityville Memorial High School Principal Dr. Scott Andrews nominated Mrs. Hausfeld and her Amityville School-Business Partnership Program. The program is a model that can be easily replicated at other districts.

"I am very proud to work with such professionals," said Dr. Scott Andrews, high school principal. "Every initiative we embark on is designed to help the students of Amityville first and foremost. Mrs. Hausfeld and her guidance team has made tremendous strides in creating a model guidance program aimed at preparing our students for life after high school."

•Financial Literacy Program Provided by the North Amityville Taxpayers Association (NATA) and Citibank. Jacqueline McCullough, executive director of NATA, and Mrs. Henrietta Gardner, vice president of Citibank, delivered a five-session financial literacy program to all AMHS seniors. This program covered financial planning, budgeting, and credit among other topics.

"Continually increasing our connections with our surrounding community is sure to have a positive impact on our school in all ways," said Andrew.

•Nickerson Furniture Inc., and Amityville resident T.J. Fitzgerald donated $45, 870.83 worth of Maple Library furniture which will help in the completion of the renovation of the AMHS Library.

"Mr. T.J. Fitzgerald's generous donation has enabled AMHS to outfit our soon-to-be-renovated Library with all new furniture," said Andrews.
