ASD Varsity athletes act as role models to younger students

On May 30, the Park Avenue Elementary School in Amityville held a program,Athletes in Action. Approximately 20 Varsity athletes visited the students in the elementary school to discuss the responsibilities that come along with playing interscholastic sports. Topics included teamwork, grades, commitment, peer pressure and friendship. Players also gave a skill demonstration of their sport.

"Our kids need role models and these student athletes are a perfect example of what you can achieve if you apply yourself in and out of the classroom," said Jonathan Bloom, who initiated the program as the district's athletic director.

Park Avenue students were called upon to come up and show off some of their newly aquired skills by performing a cheer, hitting baseballs and performing lay ups. Some of the athletes on hand included Dennis McDonough, Kevin Melia, Gavin Kretz, Daisy Sosa, Naleth Rolen, Diane Latchman, Jesse Seymour, Michael Watkins, Davion Davis, Shaquana Hicks, Corine Jackman and Emily Blotiau.

In photo, Varsity athletes are shown talking to elementary school students in the district, imparting on them the "secrets" of success on and off the field.
