Editorial Amityville Village has a list of codes and ordinances designed to protect the residential areas. They include measures that set down limits on noise and peddling. They provide for the Village's ability to act quickly in instances of loitering, littering and dumping. They limit development, provide for oversight on building plans and provide for a thorough review of all applications for changes or exceptions to that code. No one would argue that these are important and help maintain the quality of life for all residents. If anything, what we have heard is that people want even closer and more strict enforcement of these things to allow Amityville to change but change for the better. We think the Village should consider another code. Currently, the owners of single-family homes can rent those homes without any Village oversight as long as they are maintained as single family dwellings. In some cases, these property owners also own a home in Amityville that is their primary residence. In other cases, they are truly absentee landlords.
In the interest of ensuring that these properties are safe and well maintained, we would like to see the Village enact a law requiring that all landlords have a rental permit. These permits can be provided at a minimum cost, but should require an annual inspection by the Village Building Inspector and an appearance before the Village Board. And, this should include those property owners who have preexisting conditions for multiple family dwellings. We hope the Village board considers this change.
