Picnic of the Stars Recognizes Amityville Students Who Pursue Excellence

Northwest students in the Amityville Public Schools entertained their fans at the district's annual "Picnic of the Stars."
More than 400 star students took center stage and had the chance to shine at the Amityville Public School District's annual Picnic of the Stars. The event, coordinated by Amityville Memorial High School Assistant Principal Peter Hutchinson, is designed to commend those students who receive recognition for excellence from agencies outside of the domain of the school district. "We are so proud of all 3,182 Amityville Public School students," stated Board of Education member Juliet Jordon-Thom-pson. "You are all stars!"

Northeast Elementary students opened the event with the Pledge of Allegiance, and led the crowd in singing "My Country 'Tis of Thee." Northwest Elementary's chorus also took the stage to showcase their vocal talents. In between recognition of the student stars from each school, the high school jazz band, under the direction of Chris LaMarca, entertained the crowd. The Park Avenue drumline gave a rousing performance, and the Recorder Club at Park Avenue also exhibited their musical talents.

At the secondary level, more than 150 Edmund W. Miles Middle School students were recognized for their achievements outside the classroom. Proud Principal Jack Lenson noted that 150 "equates to 1 out of 4 students - quite an accomplishment." To celebrate, the Middle School Step Team took the stage and gave an inspiring performance. Amityville Memorial High School's Select Chorus was one of the final groups to entertain the audience, after which approximately 200 high school students were called to the stage to be recognized with awards ranging from Outstanding PSAT scores to perfect NYSSMA ratings.

The culmination of the event was a thunderous performance by the Park Avenue, Middle School and High School Drumlines, which brought audience members to their feet. "This is a day on which you should all be proud of the accomplishments you made this year," stated Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian DeSorbe.
