Amityville resident John “Jack” Cheviot Former Amityville resident John W. "Jack" Cheviot died June 1, 2007 at Bowling Green Healthcare in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was 85 years old. Born October 23, 1921 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Sydney and Marie (Merk), he was a proud U.S. Marine who served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. For more than 20 years, he was the Long Island sales manager for Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co., and later for Korea Shipping in New York City. The family lived in Amityville on Gillette Place and Brian Avenue for 29 years. In 1980 Mr. Cheviot moved to Brooklyn, Florida and finally Virginia in 2000. "We were raised as Peppermill kids," said his son, Peter, fondly remembering Amityville and the name of the area in which they were raised. While living in Amityville, he was an active St. Martin of Tours Church member, an usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus and VFW. According to his family he loved sports and spending time with his family. Mr. Cheviot leaves behind his children: Cathy Trommer and her husband Richard of Midlothian, Virginia; John O. of New York; Peter and his wife Barbara of New York; Paul and his wife Sandra of California; James and his wife Judy of New Jersey, and Thomas of New York; his nine grandchildren; his his siblings: Edward of Texas, Robert of Florida and Peggy Dunham of Florida. His wife, Marie (Evers), predeceased him in March 1999. He reposed at the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville, on June 11, 2007 with a Knights of Columbus Service. Monsignor James McNamara officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Martin's R.C. Church, assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Interment followed in St. Charles Cemetery with Military Honors.
