Ruth Smith, beloved Amityville Historical Society volunteer

Longtime Amityville resident Ruth English Smith, who was active in the Amityville Historical Society, died May 6, 2007. She was 94 years old and had lived on South Bay Avenue.

Born November 20, 1913 in Cambridge, New York to David Rice and Bessie Wright English, she graduated Albany Hospital Training School as a Registered Nurse in 1937. Her career took her to hospitals in Anaheim and San Francisco, California, New York City and her hometown of Cambridge.

After she married she lived in Richmond Hill, New York and had a summer home in Amityville, which eventually became their permanent home.

She was active in the Amityville Historical Society, Babylon's First Presbyterian Church, the Ladies Aid Society and was an accomplished seamstress who who donated the money she made from hemming upholstery and drapes to charity. In her spare time she loved to play bridge, help the blind and entertain those who would otherwise be alone.

Mrs. Smith leaves behind her step-sister, Margaret Hazlett; her sisters-in-law: Yolanda English and Arlene Karpiak; her nieces and nephews: William C. English, David C. English and his wife Donna, Donna Kratzenberg-Grippe and her husband Donald, Edith St. John and her husband Paul, Donald English and Patricia Krausse; and 15 grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Ernest; her sister, Jane English; her brothers: Benjamin, Harold and William English.

She reposed at the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville, on May 9, 2007 officiated by the Rev. Thomas Sutter. Interment followed at the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx officiated by the Rev. Barbara Hosmer.
